QUEST FOR THE BAY: Day 2 (Monday, July 2, 2001)
Route Log
Departed from ‘First-Night-Of-Hell Flats’ traveling North, downstream on the Red River to Selkirk Park (15km). NOTE: We made up a special nickname for each campsite, so as to remember them by.
Quotable Quote
“This is the furthest South we are ever going to be, and already it’s f***ing cold!” (Kevin – Day 2)
Trip Log
It’s Day 2 of who knows how many. And our first sleep sucked! There were tons of relentless bugs buzzing all over us, and it was super cold to boot! Like Kevin said, we are just starting out, we’re as far south as we’ll ever be, and already it’s cold. Yikes.
There was a funny moment this morning with Paul running around the field, wet with morning dew, trying to warm himself. He had his capote and hood on, and was skipping all around. He looked just like a leprechaun, and it gave us all a good laugh!
We decided that Day 2 would be our official ‘prep’ day. So we stopped at Selkirk Park to fix BOB and repack all the gak. We didn’t even knew what kind of gear we’d been given. Today was a good day to take stock of what we actually had to work with.
We pulled BOB out of the water – what a feat that was! He already needed patching, and we were introduced to the fine art of chinking. We worked, napped, got lots done.
After dinner, Paul and I did yoga before turning in for the night. Sleep number two also pretty much sucked. It seems like it’s gonna be easier to row than to sleep.
