The first time I travelled to Mexico, I discovered the resort we’d be staying at had an offshore reef. They also had snorkels and masks available for guests to use, and I was able to try it out. Turns out I loved it so much, I wanted to do it everyday!
It also turns out the resort only allowed guests to use the snorkels and masks for one hour per day. After that, they will charge rental feels. Apparently this is a common practice among all-inclusive resorts, so if you are fan of snorkeling, it is best to bring along your own – especially now during the time of COVID, when it’s an even better idea not to share things that we’ve put into our mouths.
As a passionate beachcomber and relentless hunter of seashells, I love exploring underwater reefs. It is so peaceful under the sea, and allows you to be fully connected to your surroundings, listening only to the sound of your own breath.
Purchasing my own snorkel and mask about ten years ago, was one of the best things I’ve ever purchased for travel. I’ve taken it on several trips since, and it’s always worth the space it takes up in my limited luggage. Having it means I can snorkel as much as I want, when I want.
If you do purchase your own gear, invest in a good set. A quality mask will fit tighter, fog up less, and resist scratches. If you wear eyeglasses (like me), you may also want to invest in prescription lenses for the mask, to see the flora and fishes much more vibrantly. I plan to do that before the next trip I take where snorkeling might be involved.
