Winter vacations in Mexico are popular for three main reasons: it’s easy to travel to, there are multitudes of options for affordable all-inclusive trips, and there are many different regions to visit. Which means you can have a different experience every time.
Between October and April, Mexico is hot, mostly sunny, and with few flying insects. The beaches are gorgeous, outdoor adventure is plenty, and the local people are warm and welcoming.
Yucatan’s eastern side
Riviera Maya is a tourist region that extends nearly 145 kilometers along the eastern side of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. In the heart of it is Playa del Carmen, 65 kilometers south of Cancun and 20 kilometers from the island of Cozumel.
Bordered by the Caribbean Sea, the beaches look exactly like fantasy pictures of turquoise blue waters and shimmering sands. Although under the water, its paradise for aquatic exploration, too. As home to the largest barrier reef system in the Northern hemisphere.
Under the sea
The Great Maya Reef is a chain of crevices, ravines, canyons, and coral gardens that stretch for nearly 1000 kilometers. As such, it’s one of the most spectacular scuba and snorkeling destinations in the world. With 100 different dive sites, 500 species of fish, four species of sea turtles, and some of the biggest sponge formations in existence.
Welcoming jungle
Underwater adventures take place inland, too, at subterranean streams throughout the jungle that are connected to submerged caverns. Here you’ll find the world’s largest underground river system, and its sprinkled with cenotes. These freshwater pools are formed by water filtering through the limestone, providing awesome myriads of tunnels, channels and caves.
Riviera Maya’s natural jungle setting is the perfect place for eco-parks, and there are several to choose from. Xcaret Park means “little inlet” and is one of the most popular sites to visit. It hosts indigenous wildlife like monkeys, bats, zebus, tapirs, and jaguars. You can also take in performances, cultural tours, ceremonies, sculptures, visits to Mayan villages, native foods, and more.
No matter which part of the country you visit, winter vacations in Mexico are a great way to warm up during the seasonal cold stretch.
