Quest for the Bay: 25 years since the big adventure

The summer of 2026 marks the 25th anniversary of Quest for the Bay.

In 2001, eight intrepid adventurers embarked on a York Boat voyage from downtown Winnipeg to the Hudson Bay. The purpose was to reenact an 1840’s trip without any modern amenities. They received food, clothing, and supplies on par with the period. And carried a ‘load of furs’ to deliver from Lower Fort Garry to York Factory.

The journey began on July 1. On August 31, they successfully completed it. Accordingly, it proved to be an incredible feat of determination, endurance, and resilience.

Made in Manitoba

Winnipeg-based motion picture production company Frantic Films produced Quest for the Bay. Attributed as pioneers of the ‘living history’ genre, they created four ‘Quest’ series: Pioneer Quest: A Year in the Real West (2001); Quest for the Bay (2002); Klondike: The Quest for Gold (2003); and Quest for the Sea (2004). Each series earned audiences from around the world, earning Frantic Films critical acclaim in the early 2000’s for being trailblazers in this kind of innovative programming.

Highest-rated show on History Television

Quest for the Bay premiered on the History Television network in 2002 in five one-hour episodes. It was one of the highest-rated television shows of it’s time. As well, it won the Blizzard Award from the Manitoba Motion Picture Industry Association for Best Documentary Series.
