Quest for the Bay: 20 years since the big adventure

The summer of 2021 marked the 20th anniversary of the Quest for the Bay voyage.

In 2001, eight intrepid adventurers embarked on a York Boat journey from downtown Winnipeg to the Hudson Bay. The purpose was to reenact an 1840’s voyage, carrying a load of ‘furs’ from Lower Fort Garry to York Factory, equipped only with food, clothing, and supplies of the period. The trip began on July 1 and took 61 days to complete.

Quest for the Bay was produced by Frantic Films, pioneers of the ‘living history’ genre. Their ‘Quest’ series, which includes Pioneer Quest: A Year in the Real West, Klondike: The Quest for Gold, and Quest for the Sea, went on to critical acclaim and set many ratings records.

Quest for the Bay premiered on History Television in 2002 in five one-hour episodes. It won the Blizzard Award from the Manitoba Motion Picture Industry Association for Best Documentary Series.
