Heated Rivalry: Hockey romance series everyone’s talking about

Hockey romance series Heated Rivalry has become one of the breakout hits of late 2025. Created by award-winning Canadian writer-director-producer Jacob Tierney (Letterkenny, Shoresy) the six-episode drama debuted on Crave in Canada and HBO Max in the U.S. and Australia.

Hockey at the centre of story

Based on Rachel Reid’s Game Changers book series, it follows two elite hockey players whose public competition hides a private, intense romantic entanglement.

At its core, the show tracks Shane Hollander (played by Hudson Williams) of the Montreal Metros and Ilya Rozanov (played by Connor Storrie) of the Boston Raiders.

What starts as a secret fling between rivals evolves into a years-long, emotionally charged relationship. Both men chase success on the ice while wrestling with love, identity, and the pressures of professional sport.

The chemistry between Williams and Storrie is the engine of the series, with both performances singled out in reviews for depth and nuance. Neither lead had played hockey before, and they had to train intensely to be able to skate and sell the game on screen.

Critically acclaimed out of the gate

Critics have embraced the series for its writing, direction, and the chemistry between its leads. On Rotten Tomatoes, the first season has a 95% approval rating.

IMDb describes the show as a “sincere, steamy love story for grown-ups.” Episode five earned a perfect 10/10 rating on IMDB, tying with the iconic episode of Breaking Bad.One of the only other TV episodes ever to reach that score on the platform.

Overall viewership numbers back up the buzz. Canadian streamer Crave announced it was the most-watched original debut in the platform’s history. On HBO Maxit quickly climbed into the top tiers of weekly viewership charts in multiple territories.

Sparking social engagement

Part of the show’s traction is the blending of mainstream sports narrative with explicit romance and LGBTQ+ representation. This combination has driven wide social media conversation and has engaged fans well beyond typical genre boundaries.

Online communities have built a massive engagement around plot threads, character arcs, and music from the show’s soundtrack.

Within weeks of its premiere, Crave and HBO Max confirmed a second season. As well as the adaption of more of Reid’s novels to expand the story beyond the initial six-episode order.

Heated Rivalry is proving there is a significant audience for adult-oriented, character-driven spicy romance. This mix of heat, heart, and high stakes has made the series one of the most buzzworthy shows of 2025. A captivated audience is already lined up for season two.
